Robin Roberts of Good Morning America Diagosed with MDS Myelodysplastic Syndrome Diagnosis

18,000 People each year are diagnosed with MDS

Robin Roberts of Good Morning America, GMA is diagnosed with MDS Myelodysplastic Syndrome

After winning the battle against Breast Cancer, Robin Roberts is now battling MDS, Myelodysplastic Syndrome Diagnosis. Of the 18,000 diagnosis or MDS each year, 300 are caused from the agressive cancer treatment, as in Robin Robertson case. Bone Marrow donors are rare especially among the African American Women but thankfully for Robin Roberts sister is as good of a match or better than if she had a twin sister.

In a Bone Marrow Transplant, the Donors stem cells are directly transfused into the patient who is suffering from MDS Myelodysplastic Syndrome. The patient with MDS will then regenerate more new blood cells which hopefully will create new healthy bone marrow.

There is only a 66% chance of finding a bone marrow transplant donor in amongst African Americans but there is a 93% chance of finding a bone marrow donor for Caucasians.

Good Morning American and Robin Roberts are encouraging people to go on the registry to become a donor with "Be the Match." Be the Match has Ten Million Donors on their registry at this time.

A simple swab in your mouth is all is takes to find out if your DNA is a match for someone who needs a bone marrow transplant. On Good Morning America, GMA, this morning, the doctor was describing how easy it is to actually donate bone marrow to someone. It is more like a blood transfusion according to GMA. Robin Roberts sister is strong and is willing.

If someone can not find a good match, their bodies immune system will attack the foreign cells which then creates a medical condition named "Graft Versus Host Disease.

So it is critical to save the lives to become a donor and in the African American race there is more of a need for Bone Marrow Donors.

WHAT is MDS MYELODYSPLASTIC SYNDROME?

MDS MYELODYSPLASTIC SYNDROME bone marrow disorders involving the stem cells. The quality and the amount of the production of the blood are disorderly and become ineffective and the blood forming cells decline irreversibly.

MDS, Myelodysplastic Syndrome used to be called Preleukemia. It is a diverse collection of of hematological medical condition. The production of blood cells become ineffective and often cause severe anemia. The anemia can be so severe that the patient with MDS Myelodysplastic Syndrome, often need a blood transfusion.

Most of the time the disease progresses and the ill patient develops cytopenia, low blood count due to the progressive failure of the bone marrow..

In approximately one third of patients affected by MDS Myelodysplastic Syndrome, becomes Acute Myelogenous Leukemia within a few months to a few years.

This MDS Myelodysplastic Syndrome median age is typically between sixty and seventy years old with a few being younger than fifty years old. MDS is even more rare in children. The disease is found in slighty more men than women.

SYMPTOMS of MDS MYLELODYSPLASTIC SYNDROME

Anemia

Neutropenia which can lead to increase chance of infection

Thrombocytopenia which can lead to increase bruising or subcutaneous hemorrhage

Some Patients display No Symptoms and some patients are diagnosed through routine blood exams.

There is risk for developing Acute Myelogenous Leukemia, which is very resistant to treatment. Approximately fifty percent of deaths occur as a result of bleeding or infection.

The younger the person with MDS Myelodysplastic Syndrome is the better the prognosis. Advanced aged patients indicate a poor prognosis.

Please confirm information. This Information is not necessarily accurate as information was gathered from a few sources: Good Morning America, GMA, Cnn Health and Wikipedia. Robin Roberts photo from GMA.

Thanks to her sisters DNA match, Robin Roberts will be undergoing a Bone Marrow Transplant. Our prayer are with Robin and her sister.

ALL proceeds from this article will be donated to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Thank you for considering saving someones life by registering to become a donor.

Update on Robin Roberts from Good Morning America. Robin will be begin her new journey next week, in September, to receive her bone marrow transplant. The generous and loving gift from her sister. Her sister already has given the bone marrow and after only a few days after donating, reports that she is back to "100%" Giving the gift of life through live donations is such a blessing to the donor because they live knowing they gave life.

Thank you Robin for sharing your struggles with MDS MYLELODYSPLASTIC SYNDROME. You are an inspiration to so many for your strength and hope. I have been amazed at Robin's strength to carry on with her job. The early early mornings getting up and going to work while suffering through this illness is amazing.

God Bless Robin and we will be praying for you for a full and quick recovery.

Update on Robin Roberts:

Robin had the Bone Marrow Transplant. Her sister was a perfect match and was so kind to give Robin her "Living" organ donation. Robin is now home recovering and keeps Good Morning America informed on her recovery. Hopefully she will be strong enough to return to Good Morning America soon.
